For mature students, we run the Language Holiday:Experience London (40+) course three times a year. This is for students who wish to combine studying English with spending time getting to know London and British culture.

Legal English with TOLES Preparation

You will work on improving all four English language skills within a legal context as well as learning specific legal terminology and how to use it appropriately. The course also includes preparation for the Test of Legal English Skills (TOLES) so there is an emphasis on the exam techniques and study strategies required to pass the exam. In addition to this, participants are expected to improve their core study skills through up to 2 hours of focused self-study each evening set by their tutors to meet their needs.

You will follow our Intensive course timetable of 28-lessons per week and will study Monday - Thursday 09:15 - 15:45 and Friday 09:15 - 12:55 only.

The areas of focus on the course is commercial law, contractslitigation process, property, employment, bankruptcy and insolvency.

Language Holiday: Experience London

This course is designed for learners aged 40+ who wish to combine studying English with spending time exploring the city of London and British culture. Lessons take place in the morning, with excursions on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday afternoons, and one full day excursion on Saturday.

Tuition takes place over 26 lessons, 20 of these take place in the classroom and 6 take place in different locations around London. The total number of hours is 21 hours and 40 minutes. 

On this course, you will:

  • Have the opportunity to study with other mature students who have an interest in learning more about London and British culture.
  • Go on 6 half-day excursions and 1 full-day excursion.
  • Learn about the places you are visiting through structured morning lessons.
  • Learn about different aspects of British culture, including culture and customs, etiquette and behaviour, the British class system, art, architecture, the history behind famous gardens, music, food and drink.
  • Visit famous, historical places such as English stately homes and castles, gardens, museums, galleries and other places of cultural interest.

Students who are not at the correct level may take a combination of General English in the morning and Language Holiday: Experience London in the afternoon. The price for this is the same as for the full-time Language Holiday course.

Medical English

If you are a healthcare professional or university student and you want to improve your English langue skills in a context relevant to your career, this is the course for you. 

For those working in a medical field, it is important to be highly accurate and clear in their communication but they also need to be able to show tact and sensitivity. OET Preparation Intensive

During the course you will study a wide range of medical language, with a specific focus on ways of communicating effectively with patients and their relatives. You will improve your reading, writing and listening skills whilst learning vocabulary and increasing your accuracy in your use of grammar. You will be given strategies on how to approach the different parts of the test, and you will complete a full practice test, after which you will receive detailed feedback and further practice to ensure the best possible result in the exam.

Students will have the opportunity to sit for the exam at the end of these courses. These courses follow our intensive timetable of 28 lessons per week/23 hours 20 minutes per week.

The London Exam Centre, part of WSE, is an accredited examination centre for OET, so you can follow the course and take the examination with the same institution.

Online OET

Do you want to reach the best possible result in your OET examination? This online course is ideal for you if you do not have the time to commit to a course of classroom lessons, or if you do not live near the school. Over four weeks you will have a total of eight 50-minute face to face online lessons, and a minimum of 100 mins each week of guidance for self-study, all in the comfort of your own home no matter where you are in the world. You will focus on the unique demands of each part of the OET exam, and you will receive individualised feedback and error correction in order to ensure that you achieve the best possible result in your test.

Face-to face lessons are held on Tuesday evenings from 18:30 - 20:10, with the final lesson on the Tuesday before the OET examination.

You will:

  • Study English in a variety of Medical contexts
  • Analyse real case scenarios
  • Learn effective communication skills
  • Increase your knowledge of specialised terminology
  • Learn how to cope with difficult situations
  • Receive full guidance on how to do the OET
  • Receive detailed feedback on all aspects of your studies

Cambridge Teaching Knowledge Test

This Teachers' English language course prepares you for the Cambridge Teaching Knowledge Test – the test from the University of Cambridge designed especially for teachers of English, to speakers of other languages.

  • The English language teaching course concentrates on the study of "teaching knowledge" - it is not a practical course and so there is no actual teaching involved, although course participants will have the opportunity to observe Wimbledon School of English teachers. It is ideal for those who have recently started teaching or are considering it as a career, but it is also useful for experienced teachers
  • The English language teaching course covers a variety of concepts related to language, language use and the background to and practice of language learning and teaching. It is divided into three modules

Module one: Language and background to teaching and learning

  • Describing language and language skills
  • Background to language learning

Module two: Lesson planning and resources for the language teacher

  • Planning and preparing a lesson or sequence of lessons
  • Selection and use of resources and materials

Module three: Managing the teaching and learning process

  • Teachers' and Learners' language in the classroom
  • Classroom management

You can choose to take a written examination, the Cambridge TKT, at the end of the course. You will also be asked to keep a portfolio during your course but this does not form part of your assessment. You need to have at least a good intermediate level of English to take this course and you should be familiar with basic concepts and language related to language teaching. This course follows our standard timetable of 24 lessons per week/20 hours per week.

The fee for the Paper Based Teaching Knowledge Test (per module) is £47.

The fee for the Computer Based Teaching Knowledge Test (per module) is £58.

Teaching with Technology

This course is designed for qualified teachers at any stage in their career. Increasingly, teachers are expected to be able to use and exploit a variety of technological aids in a meaningful way. Many teachers feel intimidated by technology, while others find that their own skills and ideas are quickly exhausted.

Course details

During this week-long course participants will study the latest in theory and methodology of teaching English with technology. This will be combined with practical elements in order to build confidence in using a variety of technological aids in the classroom, thus making participants more flexible and effective teachers. There will be opportunities to use a variety of tools and sites, and participants will be encouraged to blog their experience and self-reflection. This course follows our standard timetable of 24 lessons per week/20 hours per week.
