School Rules Policy

  • To provide an environment in which students can achieve their English language learning aims
  • To develop and publish a comprehensive set of rules that will support the learning experience
  • To provide an environment in which students can study safely
  • To encourage tolerance and consideration of others

 School Rules

Please be on time for your classes. You will not be allowed into the lesson if you are more than 15 minutes late for the first lesson, or more than 5 minutes late for the second and third lessons.
We are a serious school and expect every student to be on time, attend every lesson and do all their homework.

Any student who is sick must:

  • For absences of up to and including 7 school days, complete a self-certification sickness form on their return.
  • For absences of 8 school days or more, provide a ‘fit note’ from their doctor.

If you are absent for 10 consecutive days or more, or are repeatedly absent (e.g. 1 or 2 days per week), without authorisation, you will be reported to the Home Office if you are a visa national, and to your sponsor if you are a sponsored student, and you may be asked to leave the school.

If you are asked to leave the school for poor attendance or conduct your fees will not be refunded.

You will only receive a leaving certificate if your attendance has been 80% or more.

You must telephone or email us to tell us if you cannot come to school for any reason.

Homework is important and must be handed in on time. You will get up to 2 hours self-study work each evening.

Food and Drink

Chewing gum is not allowed anywhere in the school building or garden.
Please do not eat or drink during the lessons (water is allowed).
Please do not take food or drink into the Study Centre or the classrooms on the third floor. You can eat in the Common Rooms, garden and ground floor and first floor classrooms.

Please keep your classroom, the public areas of the school and the gardens tidy. Use the litter bins provided for your rubbish.

Use of Mobile Phones and Recording Equipment

The use of mobile phones during lessons for calls or anything else apart from classroom learning is prohibited. Please do not leave the lesson in order to use your mobile phone. You must not film or audio record classes.

Speaking English

English must be spoken at all times in class and in the Common Room. Any students speaking their own language in class will be asked to pay a 20p fine (all money collected is given to charity).

Bullying and Harassment

Please treat all students and members of staff with respect. If you think someone has treated you badly or if someone is making you unhappy please speak to a member of staff immediately.

Smoking is not permitted anywhere inside the school buildings. You may smoke in the gardens but please use the ashtrays provided. If you put your cigarette ends in the flowerbeds or pots, they will kill the plants. Please do not smoke at the ‘no smoking’ tables in the garden. NB You are not allowed to smoke in the UK if you are under 18.

Neighbours and the Community

Please be considerate towards our neighbours and do not run, shout or play ball games in the garden. It is important that you do not stand alone or in groups on the pavement in front of the school. Please stand in the front gardens of the school.
Please do not walk along the street in large groups as other people, children and parents with prams are forced onto the road.
If you commit a criminal offence or have to be severely disciplined you will be asked to leave and no refund will be given. We will also inform the immigration authorities, your sponsor, and your parents if you are under 18.
If you leave your WSE course early and are here on a General Student Visa, we have to inform the Home Office.

Fire and Safety

If you discover a fire, operate the nearest fire alarm call-point.
On hearing the fire alarm, you must leave the building IMMEDIATELY by the front or side entrances and report to your teacher/the person in charge of the assembly point in Malcolm Road. Do NOT go into the garden.
Use the nearest available exit.
Do not stop to collect personal belongings.
Do not re-enter the building until you are told that it is safe to do so.

It is also your responsibility to help us to maintain a safe environment in the school and to take reasonable care of yourself and others. If you notice a health problem or a safety problem, please tell the Principal or the Student Services Coordinator in Reception immediately.

Internet Access

The entire main building of WSE is wireless enabled. Students may use the school’s computer equipment to access websites to assist them in their studies, either with or without the guidance of a teacher or the Study Centre Manager. Students may also use the computers in the common room, or their own devices, to access other websites. However, students are strictly forbidden to access, either on the school system or their own 3G or 4G networks, any site which is deemed inappropriate, in line with the government’s Prevent policy. Such sites include, but are not limited to, those which are racist, sexist, pornographic, homophobic, or are deemed to promote violence or extremist views which contradict core British values.
