Our love for the Great British Pub: #MyWse Teachers nominate their favourite pubs around Wimbledon

You’re in class or at work, it’s almost the end of your day, you’re thirsty, really thirsty; hungry and you just want some well-deserved time out with your friends!

Now where’s the perfect place for you and your friends to relax, laze about on big comfy armchairs, eat, drink, soak up some sun Cool in the garden ('cos that’s what we like do do here in London when we get any slight glimmer of sunshine!) The ‘pub’ of course! We know you knew that!

These are some of the best pubs here in Wimbledon, as recommended just for you by the staff here at WSE:

The Hand and Racquet, nominated by Sarah Hausey

This trendy pub has a laid-back ‘je ne sais quoi’ about it and it’s perfectly located on the High Street, about 2 minutes away from the school.  What’s more, their 2-for-1 Happy Hour is on every day from 4-7pm on cocktails, Prosecco and bottles of Peroni.

The Crooked Billet:  Nominated by Julian Oakley

Cool yet rustic, the Crooked Billet on the corner of Wimbledon Common is that pub you wanna check out for its great food and scarily large choice of drinks, not to forget its charming decor.  They hold a Quiz Night every Monday and who doesn’t love a good quiz?!  I know we do!  AND if that’s not enough to entice you, in the summer months you can enjoy your drinks out on deckchairs and rugs on the common – how very idyllic!

Bertie’s Bar: Nominated by Yasmin Mohiuddin

‘Bertie’s’ is definitely one of a kind.  It’s hidden in the basement of one of the oldest pubs in Wimbledon (The Prince of Wales) and that adds to its cosy and chilled atmosphere. The best things about this pub are its live music events and comedy club (by the way, these are two separate events, having them together would be a tad peculiar!), the yummy food and its hip and contemporary design.

Rose & Crown: Nominated by Vittorio Pelosi

This little gem of a pub is only a 10-min walk from the famous All England Lawn Tennis Club.  In the summer you and your friends can enjoy the night away al-fresco in the courtyard, and in winter they have open fires (lush!) and put up tall lamp things in the garden that are in fact outdoor heaters – so helpful they are! Traditional roast dinners are served every Sunday and a Poker Night every Wednesday! They do get busy in there (and busy = good) so be warned.

The Alexandra: Nominated by Jo Krousso

The Alexandra is in the heart of Wimbledon town and we love it for its comfortable and friendly atmosphere, comfy sofas, huge TVs where you can watch big sporting games, and of course its roof-top bar - up there in spring and summer with great music and the sun beating down on you, it’s the place to be!

The great British pub is part of our culture and it's open to everyone! So if you’re friendly, happy, sociable, chatty, like sharing and letting your hair down, don’t mind making friends with random people, you’ll definitely love the British pub as much as we do!
